LEAN: LABOR ENVIRONMENT ACTION NETWORK

Lean Introduction

The Labor Environment Action Network (LEAN) is the largest non-factional body inside Labor. We are made up of and enable the grassroots of our party to raise their voice on environmental issues. Our advocacy often involves holding events, visiting branches, talking to MPs, making submissions to reviews and inquiries, as well as writing policy. For example, in 2018 our proposals to strengthen Australia’s environmental laws and set up an independent EPA were adopted at national conference. This followed a campaign which passed motions in over 500 branches. LEAN continues to grow with increasing numbers of Local LEAN groups within each state and territory branch.

Currently, LEAN is working toward policy which addresses both climate change and the need to secure employment in our regions. We believe that consensus here will be best served through early and open collaboration via an alliance of workers, unions, and the broader environmental movement. Australians have been encouraged to see the environment and prosperity as being at odds for too long. It is a false division, a worker-centred climate policy stands to provide good regional jobs with good conditions and pay. It stands to allow the children of regional families to find a future where they grew up. Building an alliance to serve these ends is an important part of our work at the moment but is by no means the limit of our advocacy.

If you’d like to be a part of the alliance we are building as well as other NSW LEAN advocacy then please visit www.lean.net.au and enter your email in the top right-hand corner; we will be in touch with event details. If you’re interested in involvement with a Local LEAN or starting your own, please feel free to reach out to our Convenor Jaden Harris (jaden@lean.net.au) or one of our co-organisers, Penny Pedersen (penny@lean.net.au) and Tim Lang (timothy@lean.net.au).
